LCDR Fabian Purcell

Service: Royal Australian Navy

Graduate of Monash University Medical School, Melbourne. Joined the Australian Naval Reserve 1988 Full Time Service in 1990-91 including duties in the Persian Gulf Completed Anaesthesia training becoming a Fellow of the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists in 1998. First Provisional Fellow in Anaesthesia to work as Research Fellow in the Southern Health Care Network Patient Simulation Centre in 1998. Was a Prince of Wales Award winner in 1998 for his submission titled "Realistic Patient Simulation for ADF Health Services". Has subsequently been part of the Simulation Centre Staff at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda Maryland, USA. Graduated from the RAN Staff Acquaint Course in 1999 as Dux of his class earning the Lonsdale Medal. Is now on the Directing Staff for the RAN Staff Acquaint Course. LCDR Purcell is currently in private Anaesthetic practice in Melbourne and is an instructor in Human Patient Simulation and Crisis Management at the St Vincents Simulation Centre, Melbourne where he is the the convener for the Human Factors module for the St Vincents 'Effective Management of Anaesthetic Crisis' (EMAC) Course. Academic interests include Human factors Research into Human and Organisational Error, Patient Safety Issues and Cognitive Decision Making under Stress -all with particular relevance to ADF practice.
